Specifications matter more than marketing labels
Rock Blades works across several steels and handle materials. The correct choice depends on the product, intended use, maintenance expectations and design. We state the confirmed material on each product page and avoid applying one specification to the entire catalog.
Damascus steel
Modern Damascus commonly refers to pattern-welded steel created by forge-welding contrasting steels and revealing the pattern through finishing and etching. Pattern, layer construction, hardness and steel combination can vary. Natural pattern differences make each handmade blade visually individual.
D2 tool steel
D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel valued for wear resistance and edge retention. It is often described as semi-stainless, but it can still corrode and should be cleaned, dried and protected.
High-carbon steel
High-carbon steels can take a keen edge and are widely used for working knives, axes, machetes and swords. They usually require regular drying and oiling because they can patina or rust when exposed to moisture.
J2 and stainless steels
Selected products use J2 or another stated stainless steel. Corrosion resistance and edge performance depend on the exact alloy and heat treatment, so check the individual product specification rather than relying on the word “stainless” alone.
Natural handle materials
Wood, staghorn, deer horn, buffalo horn, camel bone and other natural materials vary in grain, colour and texture. These variations help make every handmade handle unique. Natural handles should be kept away from prolonged water, excessive heat and extreme dryness.
