Protect the blade after every use
Handmade Damascus, D2 and high-carbon steel blades can give years of service when they are kept clean, dry and protected. Corrosion resistance varies by steel, finish and use, so do not assume a patterned or polished blade is maintenance-free.
Cleaning
- Hand-wash suitable working knives with mild soap and warm water.
- Do not leave a blade soaking and do not place handmade knives in a dishwasher.
- Dry the blade, guard, handle and fasteners immediately with a soft cloth.
- For display swords, axes and collector pieces, use a dry soft cloth unless the product instructions state otherwise.
Oiling and corrosion prevention
Apply a light, even coat of suitable blade oil after cleaning and before long-term storage. Use food-safe mineral oil on kitchen knives or other blades that will contact food. Avoid cooking oils because they can become sticky or rancid.
Wood, horn and bone handles
Natural handles can react to water, heat and very dry conditions. Wipe them clean rather than soaking them, avoid dishwashers and do not leave them near heaters or in direct sunlight for extended periods. Use only a care product suitable for the specific handle material.
Leather sheaths and scabbards
A sheath protects during transport but can hold moisture against steel. Never store a damp or freshly cleaned blade in leather. Allow both blade and sheath to dry completely, and use a separate dry storage method for long periods where practical.
Sharpening
Use a sharpening method appropriate for the blade geometry and intended edge. Maintain a consistent angle and protect decorative finishes. Large swords, double-edged blades, recurves and valuable collector pieces should be handled by an experienced sharpener if you are uncertain.
Safe and lawful handling
- Keep blades away from children and unauthorized users.
- Use the right blade for the task and wear appropriate protective equipment.
- Do not throw, pry, strike or baton with a product unless its listing specifically states that use.
- Check local ownership, age, import, transport and carry laws before purchase or use.
